The Next GenerATion of AI Policy Makers: Innovative ApproacHEs to AI EducatioN for A Diverse Society
PROJECT NUMBER: 2023-1-EL01-KA220-SCH-000152718

The motivation for the ATHENA project is to address the challenges of integrating refugee and migrant children into the European education system and empower them to become future policy makers in the field of AI. AI is chosen as a tool for the project because it has the potential to transform economies and societies, but it also poses ethical, legal, and social challenges. Therefore, it is essential to educate young people about AI and its impact on society to prepare them to become responsible citizens and future policy makers. By engaging young people in the development of principles for the development and use of AI, the project aims to promote a more inclusive and diverse society where the benefits of AI can be realized while minimizing its negative impacts. The project aims to create a dialogue between natives and non-natives and promote social inclusion by involving students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. It will achieve this by providing well-structured, digital and innovative training programs, and encouraging international cooperation and multi-stakeholder responses.
The project is important because it addresses two critical issues facing the EU today. Firstly, the refugee and migrant crisis is an ongoing challenge, and proper integration of newcomer students into the education system is crucial for their future success and well-being. Secondly, the EU is lagging behind China and the USA in the AI race, and educating the next generation of policy makers about AI is vital to ensure competitiveness in the global economy.
The ATHENA project aligns with the European Union's focus on digital transformation readiness and resilience, inclusiveness and diversity in education, and continuous professional development of teachers and educators. It also supports the United Nations' Sustainable Digital Goals, recognizing the importance of equal digital education opportunities for sustainable growth and development.
By funding the ATHENA project, the EU shall demonstrate its commitment to addressing these critical issues and ensure that the next generation of policy makers is well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the 21st century. The project's emphasis on inclusiveness and diversity also promotes social cohesion and helps to build a more inclusive and prosperous society. The project should be funded because it addresses a critical need for the integration of newcomer students into the European education system, particularly in the context of the digital transformation of the EU.
